There is a reason money jar spells have been practiced for centuries — across cultures, continents, and traditions. They work because they are honest. You take a vessel, you fill it with intention and with the energy of abundance, you seal it, and you keep it close. Simple. Powerful. Yours.
Today I want to share my favorite version — one that calls on the golden dragon who has become something of a familiar presence here at Prince and Potter. You may have met him in the candle spell for abundance. He returns here because he belongs here, coiled around the jar, watching over what grows inside.
The Golden Dragon and the Open Flow
The golden dragon doesn’t hoard — that’s a myth. He guards. There’s a difference. He guards the energy of abundance, making sure it flows to where it’s needed, to those who are open to receiving it. When you invite him into your money jar spell, you’re not asking for a windfall. You’re asking to remove the blocks — the fear, the scarcity thinking, the quiet belief that there’s not enough — and to open yourself to the flow that’s already there, waiting.
What You’ll Need
The beauty of a money jar spell is that it can be as simple or as elaborate as you choose. A tiny cork jar from your kitchen shelf is just as powerful as a large apothecary bottle. A handful of herbs from your spice rack carries just as much magic as a curated collection of dried botanicals. The jar doesn’t make the spell — your intention does.
Your jar:
Any glass jar with a lid will work — small or large, found or bought, cork-topped or screw-capped. A baby food jar, a jam jar, a pretty apothecary bottle, a tiny potion vial. If it holds things and seals shut, it’s perfect. (If you’d like something beautiful to keep on your altar, I love these mini cork glass jars.)
Your ingredients — choose what calls to you:
✦ A few coins (any denomination — the energy of exchange matters, not the amount)
✦ A pinch of cinnamon — for warmth, speed, and drawing abundance in
✦ A bay leaf — write your intention on it before it goes in
✦ A pinch of rosemary — for clarity and focus in your financial intentions
✦ A small piece of citrine — the abundance stone, optional but wonderful
✦ A pinch of dried basil — a classic herb for prosperity and money magic
✦ Optional: a few grains of rice or oats — for steady, sustained abundance
For the ritual itself:
✦ A green or gold candle (green for money and growth, gold for the dragon’s energy)
✦ Your candle snuffer
✦ Optional: a piece of paper and pen to write your intention
The Spell
Choose a time when you won’t be interrupted — ideally on a Thursday (the day of abundance and expansion), during a waxing or full moon, or simply whenever the moment feels right. Magic responds to intention, not to perfect timing.
Light your green or gold candle and take three slow breaths. Feel the warmth of the flame. Let it settle you.
Hold your empty jar in both hands and say aloud or in your heart:
“I open this vessel to abundance. I open myself to receive. Golden dragon, guardian of flow — be with me now.”
Begin adding your ingredients one at a time, slowly and with intention. As each one goes in, name what you are calling in — not just money, but what money represents to you. Freedom. Security. Ease. The ability to give generously. Speak it plainly.
If you’ve written your intention on a bay leaf, fold it toward you (always toward you, to draw things in) and tuck it into the jar.
When your jar feels complete, hold it up to the candlelight and say:
“By herb and coin and golden flame, abundance flows — I call its name. The dragon guards what I have sown. The flow is open. The seeds are grown.”
Seal your jar. Hold it between your palms for a moment and feel the warmth of your intention inside it.
Then snuff your candle with gratitude.
Place your money jar somewhere meaningful — near where you work, on your altar, beside your front door, or wherever feels right for your home and your intention. Some witches shake their jar gently each day as a reminder of what they’re calling in. Others simply let it sit and trust the process.
A Few Notes from Willow
✦ There is no wrong jar. I cannot say this enough. A recycled pasta sauce jar with a washed-out label is just as sacred as a hand-blown apothecary bottle. The magic lives in you, not in the vessel.
✦ There is no wrong budget. A single coin, a pinch of cinnamon from the kitchen, and a birthday candle stub will work just as well as a fully curated ingredient list. Abundance magic does not require you to spend abundantly to begin with.
✦ Trust the feeling over the formula. If something feels right to add — a button your grandmother gave you, a small stone from a meaningful place, a word you wrote on a scrap of paper — add it. Your instincts are part of the spell.
✦ Keep it where you’ll see it. The money jar works in part because it keeps your intention in your awareness. Every time you glance at it, you’re reinforcing the energy of what you’re calling in.
