By Willow, Your Guide at Prince and Potter
There are moments in life when the fog rolls in.
You know the feeling — when you are standing at a crossroads and every direction looks the same. When your mind is full of noise and you cannot hear your own heart. When a decision needs to be made and you simply cannot see clearly enough to make it.
In those moments, I light a candle.
Not because I believe the candle will think for me. But because the act of lighting it — of sitting in its warm, focused glow, of setting a deliberate intention and holding it in my awareness — creates the conditions in which clarity can arise. The candle gives my restless mind something to anchor to. The flame says: be here, be still, be present. And in that stillness, the answer almost always comes.
In many magical traditions, dragons are the guardians of wisdom and truth. They see through illusion. They burn away what is false. When I work with candle magic for clarity, I sometimes invite dragon energy into my practice — not as a fearsome force, but as a guide. The dragon in the flame is not there to frighten you. It is there to help you see. 🐉
This is one of the simplest and most effective spells in my practice. I have done it before job interviews, before difficult conversations, before big life decisions, and before ordinary Tuesdays when I simply felt scattered and unclear. It works every time — not through magic alone, but through the ancient, powerful combination of intention, attention, and trust. ✦
What You’ll Need
One of the most beautiful things about candle magic is its simplicity. You do not need a full altar, an elaborate setup, or years of practice. You need very little — and what you need is easy to find.
Essential:
- One white or yellow candle — white for purity and clarity, yellow for mental focus and illumination. Either works beautifully. A simple tea light, a pillar candle, or a taper candle — any size, any style.
- A quiet space where you will not be disturbed for 10-20 minutes
- Your intention — a clear, genuine desire for clarity on a specific question or situation
Optional but lovely:
- A small piece of paper and pen — to write your question or intention
- Clear quartz crystal — the master amplifier, perfect for clarity work
- Amethyst — for spiritual insight and mental calm
- A few drops of rosemary or lemon essential oil — to anoint your candle (rosemary for mental clarity, lemon for focus and fresh perspective)
- A fireproof holder for your candle
Find candles, clear quartz, and amethyst in The Emporium at Prince and Potter.
Before You Begin
Take two minutes to prepare yourself before you light the candle.
Cleanse your space — open a window, light incense, ring a bell, or simply clap your hands three times to clear the energy. You are creating a container for focused magic.
Get clear on your question — this is the most important step. The more specific your question, the more specific the clarity you will receive. Rather than “I need clarity about my life,” try “I need clarity about whether to accept this job offer” or “I need clarity about this relationship.” Specificity is the sharpest tool in magic.
If you are anointing your candle — place a drop of rosemary or lemon essential oil on your fingertips and draw it along the candle from base to tip (drawing things toward you). As you do, focus on your intention.
The Candle Spell for Clarity
Step 1: Ground yourself
Sit comfortably before your unlit candle. Place your feet flat on the floor. Take five slow, deep breaths — in through the nose, out through the mouth. With each exhale, let the mental noise settle a little more.
Feel yourself arriving in this moment. You are here. You are present. You are ready.
Step 2: Hold your question
Bring the situation you need clarity on into your awareness. Don’t analyse it — just hold it gently, the way you might hold something fragile. Feel the genuine desire for clarity and understanding.
If you have written your question on paper, hold it in your hands now. Read it quietly to yourself. Let it be real.

Step 3: Light the candle
As you light your candle, speak your intention aloud. You can use these words or your own:
“I light this flame as a beacon for clarity. May the fog lift, may the noise still, and may I see my path with clear and honest eyes. I am open to truth, wherever it leads. So mote it be.”
Step 4: Gaze into the flame
This is the heart of the spell. Simply sit and gaze softly at the flame — not staring intensely, but resting your eyes on the light with a relaxed, open awareness.
As you gaze, hold your question lightly in the back of your mind. Do not force answers. Do not analyse. Simply be present with the flame and your question, and allow.
If you are working with dragon energy, imagine a small luminous dragon coiling in the heart of the flame — a guardian of truth, burning through confusion and illusion on your behalf. You do not need to see it clearly. Simply invite the energy and trust that it is there.
Thoughts will arise — let them come and go without grabbing onto them. Sometimes clarity comes as a sudden knowing, a clear thought that rises above the noise. Sometimes it comes as a feeling — a sense of yes or no, of rightness or wrongness. Sometimes it comes later, in a dream or a quiet moment the following day.
Stay with the flame for as long as feels right — at least five minutes, but follow your instinct.
Step 5: Receive and release
When you feel complete, take one final deep breath. Place your hand on your heart and say:
“I trust what I know. I trust what I will come to know. The clarity I seek is already within me, finding its way to the surface. I release this intention to the flame and to the universe. Thank you.”
If you wrote your question on paper, you may safely burn it in the candle flame now — releasing it fully. Or keep it in your journal to revisit once clarity has arrived.
Step 6: Close the spell
You have two options for your candle:
Let it burn down completely — if it is a small candle, let it burn safely to the end. The spell continues working as it burns.
Snuff it out (never blow — blowing is said to scatter the intention) and relight it the following night, continuing the spell until the candle is spent.
As you close, say simply: “It is done. So mote it be.” ✦
After the Spell — How Clarity Arrives
Clarity from candle magic rarely arrives like a lightning bolt (though sometimes it does!). More often it comes quietly, in the hours and days after your spell.
Watch for:
- A sudden knowing or sense of peace about a decision
- A conversation that provides unexpected insight
- A dream that illuminates something you hadn’t seen
- An article, book, or song that speaks directly to your question
- A gut feeling that becomes impossible to ignore
Keep a journal of what arises in the 48 hours after your spell. You may be surprised at how much clarity has quietly arrived.
And if clarity still feels elusive — repeat the spell on three consecutive nights. There is great power in the number three, and sometimes the layers need time to peel away. ✦
A Note on White Candles
White candles are my first recommendation for this spell because white contains all colors — it is the ultimate neutral, the blank page, the open mind. When you are seeking clarity, white asks nothing of you except presence and honesty. It will not push you toward any particular answer. It simply holds the space for truth to emerge.
Yellow candles are wonderful too — associated with the sun, with the intellect, with illumination and mental acuity. If you are dealing with a situation that requires sharp thinking and logical clarity rather than emotional or intuitive guidance, yellow is your colour.
And if you have neither? Any candle will work. The colour is a correspondence — a tool to help focus your intention. The intention itself is always the most important thing. ✦

A Final Word from Willow
I want to leave you with something important.
The clarity you are seeking is not hiding from you. It is not locked away in some inaccessible part of yourself, waiting for the perfect spell to release it. It is already there — beneath the noise, beneath the fear, beneath the voices of everyone who has ever told you what you should want or who you should be.
The candle is simply a doorway. A way of saying to yourself: I am ready to know. I am ready to be honest. I am ready to see.
And the dragon in the flame? That is the part of you that has always known. Ancient, patient, and absolutely certain of your path. You are simply learning to listen to it again.
That willingness to see clearly — that genuine, courageous readiness to face the truth — is the real spell.
Light your candle, dear seeker. The path is already there.
With love and candlelight,
Willow ✦
