There are times when the world feels too close.
When you sense something unsettled in the energy around you. When a person, a place, or a situation leaves you feeling exposed and vulnerable. When you lie awake at night with the uneasy feeling that your boundaries — physical, emotional, or spiritual — need strengthening.
In those moments, I light a candle and I call the dragon.
In the oldest magical traditions, long before dragons became the stuff of fantasy and legend, they were revered as the greatest of all protectors. Fierce, ancient, and utterly loyal to those they guard, dragon energy is among the most powerful protective forces available to the witch. When you invite a dragon to stand sentinel over your sacred space, you are calling on something vast and primordial — something that has been protecting seekers like you since the very first flames were lit in the very first darkness.
This spell is simple. But do not mistake simplicity for weakness. The dragon does not need elaborate ceremony. It needs only your genuine call and your trust. 🐉
What You’ll Need
Essential:
- One black or deep red candle — black for banishing negativity and creating powerful protective boundaries, deep red for fierce protective energy and strength. Either is perfect.
- A quiet space where you will not be disturbed for 10-20 minutes
- Your intention — a clear, genuine desire for protection of yourself, your home, your loved ones, or your sacred space
Optional but powerful:
- Black tourmaline — the ultimate protection crystal, absorbs and deflects negative energy
- Obsidian — volcanic, fierce, and deeply protective. Dragon energy in stone form.
- A few drops of frankincense or black pepper essential oil — frankincense for spiritual protection and purification, black pepper for fierce energetic boundaries
- A small piece of paper and pen — to write what or whom you are protecting
- A fireproof holder for your candle

Before You Begin
Cleanse your space — this is especially important for a protection spell. Open windows, burn frankincense or sage, or clap your hands sharply three times in each corner of the room. You are clearing the field before you call in your guardian.
Know what you are protecting — be specific. Are you protecting your home? Your energy? A loved one? A project or endeavor? The more clearly you name what needs protection, the more precisely the dragon can stand guard.
If you are anointing your candle — place a drop of frankincense or black pepper oil on your fingertips and draw it along the candle from tip to base (pushing things away from you, creating a boundary). As you do, feel the fierce intention of protection moving through you.
The Candle Spell for Protection
Step 1: Ground and center yourself
Sit comfortably before your unlit candle. Feel your feet on the floor — solid, rooted, connected to the earth. Take five deep breaths, and with each exhale release any fear or anxiety you are carrying. You are not casting this spell from a place of fear. You are casting it from a place of power.
Feel that power now. You are a witch. You have every right to protect what is yours.
Step 2: Hold your intention
Bring clearly into your mind what you are protecting. See it surrounded by light — golden, impenetrable, fierce. Feel the love behind your desire to protect it. Whether it is your home, your family, your own energy field, or your peace of mind — hold it in your heart with fierce, loving intention.
If you have written what you are protecting on paper, hold it now. Let it be real.
Step 3: Light the candle
As you light your candle, speak your intention aloud. You can use these words or your own:
“I light this flame as a beacon for protection. I call upon the ancient dragon energy to stand guard over [name what you are protecting]. No harm shall pass. No darkness shall linger. I am protected, I am strong, I am safe. So mote it be.”
Step 4: Call the dragon
This is the heart of the spell. Gaze into the flame and imagine, in the shadows just beyond the candlelight, an immense and ancient dragon. It is not frightening — it is magnificent. It has come because you called it. It is here because it chooses to guard you.
See it settle behind the flame, vast and watchful. Its eyes glow with ancient intelligence. Its presence fills the room like armor — impenetrable, absolute. Nothing that means you harm can pass through that guardian energy.
You do not need to see it clearly. Simply feel the shift in the energy of the room as the protection settles into place. Many witches describe it as a sudden sense of solidity — a feeling that the walls of the space have thickened and strengthened. Trust what you feel.
Stay with the flame and your guardian for at least five minutes. Longer if it feels right.
Step 5: Seal the protection
When you feel complete, place your hand on your heart and say:
“The dragon stands guard. The boundary is sealed. I am protected in this moment and in all moments that follow. What is mine is safe. I release this intention to the flame and to the ancient ones who answer my call. Thank you.”
If you wrote what you are protecting on paper, hold it to the flame and let it burn — releasing the intention fully into the magic. Or keep it beneath your black tourmaline on your altar, reinforcing the protection as long as it is needed.
Step 6: Close the spell
As with all candle magic — never blow out your candle. Snuff it gently and say:
“The flame rests. The dragon does not. It is done. So mote it be.” 🐉✦
After the Spell — Signs Your Protection is Working
Protection magic often works quietly and invisibly — which is exactly how it should work. You may notice:
- A sudden sense of calm and safety in your space
- Situations or people that felt threatening simply… fade away
- A feeling of solidity and strength in your own energy field
- The unsettled feeling that prompted the spell simply lifts
- Others commenting that your home feels different — calmer, safer, more peaceful
Reinforce your protection by repeating the spell on three consecutive nights, or at each New Moon to refresh and renew the boundary. The dragon does not tire — but regular renewal honors the relationship and keeps the energy strong.
Place your protection crystals — black tourmaline or obsidian — near the entrance of your home after the spell to act as physical anchors for the protective energy. ✦
A Note on Black Candles
Black candles carry an undeserved reputation among those new to witchcraft. They are not dark or negative — they are among the most powerful tools for protection and banishing available to the witch.
Black absorbs everything. It takes in negative energy, neutralizes it, and returns it to the earth as something neutral and harmless. When you burn a black candle for protection you are not inviting darkness — you are using darkness as a shield. Think of it as the dragon’s scales — dark, impenetrable, and absolutely protective.
Deep red candles are equally powerful for protection — associated with Mars, with courage, with fierce and active protective energy. Where black is a shield, red is a sword.
